Ruta Puerta Verde San Juan-Niebla
The San Juan–Niebla Green Gate Route is a 16-kilometre, low-difficulty itinerary connecting the towns of San Juan del Puerto and Niebla, offering visitors a unique experience that combines history, nature and heritage. This route is part of the Green Gates project, an initiative that seeks to promote non-motorised transport, recreation and environmental education, reducing the isolation of urban populations.
The trail begins in San Juan del Puerto, next to the ancient Roman bridge from the 3rd century AD, a structure that stands out for its preservation and beauty. From there, the path follows the route of an old cattle track, the Cordel Camino de Villarrasa a Trigueros, parallel to the A-472 road, until it reaches the Moro stream, where the resting place and watering hole for livestock of the same name is located.
Along the route, walkers and cyclists can enjoy various points of interest, such as the Arroyo Candón stream in the municipality of San Juan del Puerto and the Balastrera bird observatory, a wetland that retains water almost all year round and is home to various species of water birds.
Most of the trail runs alongside the Tinto River, offering panoramic views of this unique landscape. The route passes through gallery forests, marshlands and farmland, providing a diverse environment rich in biodiversity. It is an ideal place for bird watching and photographing natural landscapes.
The route is suitable for both walking and cycling, with adequate signage and designated paths to ensure user safety. In addition, the route is designed to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility, promoting inclusion and enjoyment of the natural environment for all.

Its facilities include tables and barbecues, making it easy to organise outdoor meals in an incomparable natural setting. The shade provided by the large cork trees invites you to relax while enjoying the nature and tranquillity of the place.

Pantano San Walabonso
Strategically located between the historic town of Niebla and the nearby town of Valverde del Camino, the San Walabonso Reservoir is an easily accessible enclave of great natural and recreational value. This spacious and well-equipped site is one of the main outdoor areas in the region, ideal for families, groups or nature lovers to enjoy.
The area has a range of facilities designed to offer visitors comfort. These include concrete tables and benches distributed throughout the area, as well as barbecue areas where you can cook outdoors, creating the perfect setting for leisure and socialising in the heart of nature. In addition, the reservoir has a pavilion that houses basic services, including toilets and drinking water, thus facilitating a comfortable and pleasant stay.
Sport fishing is permitted on the reservoir itself, an activity that is highly valued in the area thanks to the abundance of fish in this aquatic ecosystem. Local fishermen and visitors alike find the reservoir an ideal place to enjoy their hobby in a peaceful and natural environment.
The surrounding vegetation is another of its great attractions. The typical marshland flora dominates the landscape, with extensive reed beds, tamarisk trees (popularly known as tarays in these latitudes) and cane fields bordering the shores of the reservoir. This wetland ecosystem provides shelter and food for a wide variety of animal species, especially birds, making it an ideal place for wildlife watching.
In addition, the area has a beautiful pine forest that extends throughout the surroundings, providing shade and coolness during the summer days. This contrast between wet and wooded areas enriches the biodiversity of the place and makes it a unique space within the natural environment of the County of Niebla.
Laguna de la Balestrera
Just 1.5 km from the town centre of Niebla is the Laguna de la Balastrera, an artificial wetland of great ecological value that forms part of the Río Tinto Protected Landscape. This natural space emerged in the 1970s and 1980s as a result of aggregate extraction in the area, giving rise to several shallow basins that are flooded by aquifer seepage and the accumulation of rainfall and surface runoff.
The lagoon is an important refuge for various species of water birds, with the presence of the crested coot (Fulica cristata), a species in danger of extinction in Spain, being particularly noteworthy. In addition, other species such as the white-headed duck, as well as various anatidae, ardeidae, storks and waders can be observed.
To facilitate the observation of this rich birdlife, the area is equipped with several strategically located viewpoints.
Access to the Balastrera Lagoon is easy and suitable for all visitors. From Niebla, you can walk along paths that run along the right bank of the Tinto River, offering a pleasant stroll in contact with nature.
Tostón
Every February, the village of Niebla celebrates the Tostón, a day of conviviality organised by the Brotherhood of the Virgin of the Pine, patron saint of the village. This festival, with its marked popular and gastronomic character, takes place in the natural surroundings of Lavapiés, located halfway between Niebla and Valverde del Camino.
The celebration brings together numerous residents in an atmosphere of brotherhood, joy and cultural roots. The day becomes an intergenerational meeting point where people share a table, memories and traditions, all in a natural setting of great beauty and symbolic value for the municipality.
The undisputed star of the event is the typical toasted bread seasoned with extra virgin olive oil, garlic and salt.
Romería Virgen del Pino
On Friday, at the beginning of the afternoon, one of the most eagerly awaited moments for the residents of Niebla begins: the departure for Lavapiés, where the Hermitage of the Virgen del Pino is located. From the early afternoon, the Simpecado cart and the pilgrims prepare in the town centre, amid the ringing of bells, the sound of drums and cheers for the Virgin, with carefully decorated carts, horsemen and families and friends gathering to begin the festivities.
In an atmosphere full of colour, music and joy, the procession leaves the town, travelling along roads accompanied by singing and clapping, accompanying the cart carrying the banner of the patron saint. The destination is the Ermita del Pino chapel, located in the natural setting of Lavapiés, an enclave surrounded by nature that for three days becomes the spiritual and festive heart of Niebla.
Saturday is the main day of the pilgrimage. From early in the morning, the pilgrims enjoy the day in their tents set up in the enclosure, sharing typical foods, conversations and moments of conviviality. At around 1 pm, the offering of flowers to the Virgin begins and at night all the lights in the enclosure are turned off and the rosary is recited. The rest of the time is spent dancing, singing and enjoying good food, with no shortage of sevillanas, Condado wine and local products. The atmosphere is cheerful, family-oriented and full of tradition.
On Sunday morning, mass is held and the future brotherhood leader is announced. In the afternoon, after enjoying an unforgettable weekend, the journey back to Niebla begins. The procession sets off for the village, followed by the pilgrims. The return journey is marked by a more emotional tone, where joy is mixed with nostalgia at the end of the festival. Upon arriving in the village, the procession travels through several streets until it reaches its destination, thus bringing to a close three intense days of faith, fellowship and celebration.
Fiestas Virgen del Pino
Every year, Niebla celebrates the Festival of the Virgin of El Pino with intensity and pride, one of the most important celebrations on the local calendar. This cycle of religious and popular events revolves around devotion to the patron saint of Niebla, combining the solemnity of tradition with the joyful and participatory nature of local festivals.
The festival begins on 15 August, with the transfer of the Virgin from her chapel in Lavapiés to the town centre, where she will remain until October. This moment marks the beginning of a special time for the residents, who prepare to celebrate their patron saint with fervour.
In the days leading up to the main festival, the traditional novenas are celebrated: nine days of prayer, singing and contemplation in her honour, which bring the community together in an atmosphere of faith and devotion.
During the week of 8th September, the date on which her name day is commemorated, Niebla is transformed. In addition to the liturgical and religious events, there are cultural and leisure activities for all audiences, such as the traditional Capeas, held in the emblematic Plaza de Toros ‘Monumental del Condado de Niebla’, where courage, tradition and popular spectacle come together. These bullfighting festivals, known as the ‘Fiestas de los Toros’, are deeply rooted and attract large crowds every year. In addition to the bullfights, there are concerts and musical performances that fill the festive nights with atmosphere. And as a grand finale, spectacular fireworks are set off from the banks of the River Tinto, lighting up the sky and the heart of Niebla on a magical night.
The festive cycle culminates on the first Sunday in October with the transfer of the Virgen del Pino back to her chapel in Lavapiés, where she will remain until the following 15th of August. This return marks the end of an intense few weeks, where devotion, culture and community spirit have once again shone in every corner of the municipality.
Fiestas de San Walabonso
Saint Walabonso’s Day is on 7 June, but the festivities begin on 6 June with a street party in the patron saint’s street. At one o’clock in the morning, the committee takes to the stage and holds an auction to decide who will be the senior brother or sister for the following year. On 7 June, the main ceremony is held in honour of this martyr from Iliplense, and in the afternoon, the residents and the governing board accompany the image of the patron saint during the procession through the historic centre of the town. When the image arrives at the Puerta del Buey, a spectacular fireworks display is launched in its honour. These festivities are now four centuries old.
