Cerro de la matanza

Cerro de la Matanza is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Escacena del Campo. It is a protohistoric site that forms part of Andalusia’s protected heritage and is listed in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage as a Property.

This settlement is located on a plateau, which favoured both visibility and defence of the site. Its main occupation dates from between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, coinciding with the Tartessian period in the south-west of the peninsula.

Studies have documented structural elements such as walls built of stone and adobe, as well as remains of ceramic materials. The layout of the space and the type of construction suggest that it was an organised settlement with both residential and defensive functions.

The hill is part of the archaeological context of the Guadiamar Corridor, together with other sites such as Tejada la Vieja, forming part of a group of sites of great historical and scientific value for the study of pre-Roman societies in Lower Andalusia.
